One wonderful thing about German spelling is that you basically spell how you hear the word. There are not many exceptions. The only trick is that you need to learn and understand the sounds of German letters, dipthongs, and disgraphs, some which are completely different from English pronounciation. (See The German Alphabet.) If youre spelling a word aloud in German and want to avoid confusion, you can use the German Phonetic Spelling Code. The following tips highlight in particular spelling traits of German consonants and digraphs, which once understood, will help you spell better in German. Generalities About German Consonants Usually after a short vowel sound, you will find a consonant digraph or a double consonant - die Kiste (box), die Mutter (mother). Be aware of similar-sounding consonants at the end of words, such as p or b, t or d, k or g. One good way to decipher which consonant is the correct one, is to extend the word if possible. For example das Rad (wheel, short form for bicycle)- die RÃ ¤der; das Bad (bath) - die Badewanne. It will become clear then, which consonant is at the end of the word. When there is a b or p in the middle of a word, it is more difficult to distinguish them from one another. There is no hard and fast rule here. The best solution is to take note of which words contain b and which contain p. (Die Erbse/pea, das Obst/fruit, der Papst/the Pope). The Sound Ff, v and ph A syllable that contains an nf sound, will always be written with an f. For example: die Auskunft (information), die Herkunft (origin), der Senf (mustard) Fer versus ver: The only words in German that begin with Fer are: fern (far), fertig (finished), Ferien (vacation), Ferkel (piglet), Ferse (heel). Any words derived from these words will also be written with Fer. -der Fernseher (t.v) The syllable for followed by a vowel does not exist in German, only vor. - Vorsicht (caution). To furnish or to provide in French requires the verb  fournir. This is a regular verb, so French students will be happy to know that conjugating it to mean furnished or providing is pretty straightforward. Conjugating the French Verb  Fournir In English, we use -ed and -ing endings to conjugate verbs. Things are more complicated in French because theres a new ending for each subject pronoun within each tense. This leaves you with more words to remember, but luckily  fournir  is a  regular -IR verb  and follows a relatively common conjugation pattern. As with any conjugation, we need to recognize that the verb stem is  fourn-. It is only then that we can apply the various endings to form the present, future, or imperfect past tense. Even if you take all precautions and stay aware of the road; you can’t always keep track of the always changing road conditions. Safety is key for driving, but there are many complications on the road. It’s not always the road that complicates your safety; in the story it refers to Peggy wanting to visit the liquor store. Impaired driving injures someone ever other minute; with 16,000 deaths a year. Alcohol could’ve been a factor of why ken crashed, or it could’ve been a health issue. Peggy speculated he had a stroke or something at the wheel. Another safety violation occurred in the story; says he has only hand on the wheel. Again, it’s not much but it could’ve aided to the accident. Even if the accident wasn’t within kens control, he is still responsible for it. Drivers are responsible for just about everything that happens to it and in the car. Ken took the wheel; as long with Peggy’s mobility. Other people on the road are highly unpredictable, but that doesn’t change the fact your responsible for your own. In the end, it truly is Kens fault for paralyzing Peggy. Many things factor into an accident; but I think the main reason were his awareness for the road and lack of safe driving.
